This unit is about achieving more control of your writing. By looking closely at how dialogue, paragraphs and sentences work, you will develop the capacity to identify problems and solutions in a variety of literary forms. The second half of the unit complements this tools-based approach by comparing initial and final drafts of some key modern works of genre fiction, short story and poetry. The idea is to find strategies to draw on from those examples as well. Reflecting upon how and what to revise, students will gain the skills and confidence to craft their initial drafts into enjoyable and compelling reading.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Develop and apply a critical vocabulary to explain how creative writing works;
2. Identify problems and solutions in their own and others驴 creative writing responses; and
3. Apply practical research skills for investigating writing processes to improve their own work.

Artificial intelligence

Students are permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as indicated in the assessment instructions for this unit, as well as Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.
